Military Fitness Test Prep

Whether you're a recruit preparing for boot camp, an active service member maintaining standards, or chasing a max score, this guide covers the training principles and strategies that work.

Branch-Specific Guides

Core Training Principles

Test-Specific Training

Train the exact events you will be tested on. Generic fitness programs waste time.

Progressive Overload

Systematically increase volume and intensity over time. Small, consistent gains compound.

Periodization

Structure training in phases: foundation, build, peak, and taper before test day.

Weak Point Focus

Identify your limiting events and prioritize them. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Event-Specific Training Tips

Pull-Ups

Marine Corps PFT/IST
  • Train pull-up specific volume, not just back exercises
  • Use ladders, EMOMs, and grease-the-groove protocols
  • Build from negatives if starting from zero
  • Dead hang between reps to match test standards

Push-Ups

Army ACFT, Navy PRT, Air Force PT
  • Practice test-specific form (hand-release for ACFT)
  • Build volume with pyramid and EMOM training
  • Train both speed and endurance
  • Work on pacing for 2-minute tests

Plank

Marine Corps PFT, Navy PRT
  • Train beyond minimum hold times
  • Include plank variations for trunk stability
  • Practice breathing under tension
  • Build tolerance with progressive overload on time

Running

All branches
  • Mix easy runs with interval training
  • Practice goal pace with specific distance repeats
  • Build aerobic base before adding speed work
  • Run at least 2-3x per week minimum

Sample Training Week

A typical military test prep week balances event-specific work with supporting strength and conditioning. Here's a 4-day template:

Day 1

Upper Body + Core

Pull-up work, push-up density, plank holds

Day 2

Run Development

Intervals or tempo run, mobility

Day 3

Full Body Conditioning

Circuit training, event simulation

Day 4

Run + Recovery

Easy run, flexibility, active recovery
